More than ever, businesses are putting emphasis on sustainability. Protecting our environment continues to be a priority for organisations, and it can go further than cycling to work and cutting down on energy usage. Every aspect of a business’ carbon emissions can be tracked – and that includes exhibition spaces.

When creating exhibitions, we help clients create truly sustainable spaces – not just by name, but by nature. From materials used, energy consumed and post-show usage, it’s possible to create considerable reductions in carbon output when creating your next space.

Here are just a few things we consider when you’re you’re planning or designing a sustainable exhibition space.

Eco-friendly vs sustainable

First, let’s address something. Sustainable exhibition spaces are not the same as eco-friendly exhibition spaces. Eco-friendly is a blanket term that means a product doesn’t actively harm the environment. But for a business looking to reduce emissions and fulfil its social responsibility, this isn’t enough.

Sustainable however encompasses a large number of activities surrounding a product or service that when correctly managed, actually creates positive benefits for the environment and won’t harm future generations.

Within sustainable exhibition spaces, this could include the use of PVC graphics, and using LED-only lighting to lower heat output. Another option could be switching MDF for renewable and recyclable materials (bamboo or plywood) or replacing vinyl or carpet with sustainable materials such as seagrass.

What is your ethos?

Our team want to understand the why. Only then, can we focus on the how and get to work designing.

Different businesses will have their own unique set of reasons for committing to sustainable targets. Usually, it’s at a company-wide level, or it could be an initiative from a certain department. But almost always – it’s because of a desire to play their part in helping the world fight climate change.

We take time to understand your ethos and your messaging, so we can implement that within your exhibition space. For example, if it needs to be carbon neutral, we will design in a certain way. Or if it’s focused on recycling, that will change what materials we’d suggest using.

Post-event: what happens next?

A sustainable exhibition space brings the wow factor to your events. But what happens when you’re finished with it?

Look to the future. During planning, we will consider whether the stand will be reused or recycled at the end of its life. Again, this will determine best practices and materials that are most suited to your requirements, but also most sustainable.

Recently we worked on a sustainable exhibition space that wanted to use real plants as a design feature. The space worked its magic when needed, but when it was no longer needed we were able to replant the plants after the event and give them back to nature. Blooming marvellous, right? 🌻
